Makoshika State Park

Walk a real dinosaur trail. Montana’s largest state park features badland formations and the fossil remains of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and more. You’ll find a visitor center at the park entrance with interpretive exhibits great for kids.

 

Short Pines OHV

This large area offers over 2,240 acres of public land that is open to all vehicle types. The area is open year-round but the best time to visit is during the spring and fall months or after a light rain since the trails can get very dusty during dry weather conditions.

Hunting and Fishing

The region provides excellent mule deer and antelope hunting and upland game bird and waterfowl opportunities are available. There is fishing available in ponds/reservoirs and 3 major rivers, the Missouri, Yellowstone, and Tongue which provide a unique warm water fishing experience.

Hollecker Lake

North of Glendive on Highway 16 is Hollecker Lake that is managed by Dawson County Public Works. Hollecker Lake is open all season, has picnic areas, restrooms, offers fishing, swimming, and a life-size triceratops. There is no overnight camping allowed but is a family-friendly day use location.

Intake Fishing Access

Intake Fishing Access Site (FAS) 18.6 miles north of Glendive on Highway 16 N. Opening day for Paddlefishing at Intake FAS is May 15. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks also provides basic camping sites available year round.

 

Black Bridge Fishing Access

Situated on the west side of the Yellowstone River take West Bell Street toward the river, the entrance is adjacent to the historic Bell Street Bridge. The Black Bridge area is a great place to walk, train your dog, and hunt for agates on the banks of the Yellowstone, so plan time for more than fishing.

River access points include the Glendive Boat Ramp, Black Bridge Fishing Access, Stipek Fishing Access, and Intake Fishing Access Site.

New to Glendive in 2022 is the opening of a boat tour business, Yellowstone River Adventures. Boat Tours are done by reservation only and can be made on their website.

Historic Bell Street Bridge

The Historic Bell Street Bridge in Glendive, Montana was built in 1926 to bring Bell Street across the Yellowstone River. The Bell Street Bridge reaches 1,352 ft to span the Yellowstone river connecting the two sides of the community for almost 100 years. The Bell Street Bridge is no longer accessible to motorized vehicles, but it used as a pedestrian bridge.

 

Archery and Gun Ranges


This outdoor shooting range is located on MT Highway 200S just outside of Glendive.
The shooting range is open to all shooting activities except shotguns and .50 cal. No homemade targets or clay birds allowed. Accessible from dawn to dusk with 10 shooting range spots available.

Trails End Rifle and Pistol Club is a private club with a 50ft. indoor shooting range. The shooting range is a quarter mile before the Makoshika State Park entrance. There is a yearly due for family and individuals. Check out their Facebook page for more details.

Makoshika State Park has recently taken on the archery range in the Park. There are currently a few spots for bow shooting available for use.

 

Splash Park

The Splash Park is located at Whipkey Park along East Raymond Street and right on the way to Makoshika State Park. Let the kids run around and cool off during the warm summer days.

 

Brett Fitch Memorial Skate Park

 Jaycee West Park just over the Towne Street bridge is the home of Brett Fitch Memorial Skatepark which facilitates the use of skateboards and roller skates. The Skatepark was completed August 16, 2014, in memorial of Brett Fitch for whom the park is named. The construction was possible thanks to donations including many local organizations, grants, and contributions by local businesses and individuals.

  • Lloyd Square Park

    1028 N Meade Ave
    Covered pavilion with seating, playground equipment, tennis courts, outdoor swimming pool, basketball court, across the street from the Dawson County High School track and football field

  • Penninger Park

    This park runs along the Yellowstone River with seating, playground equipment and basketball courts. Penninger Park is a great places to walk your dog or have a picnic.

  • Our Park

    Downtown park with gazebo and seating.

  • Whipkey Park

    Located near Makoshika State Park with benches, playground equipment, baseball field, and splash park

  • Eyer Park

    Located next to Reynolds Market Eyer Park functions as a soccer field, has playground equipment and the storybook walking trail around the whole park. Eyer Park is used for larger outdoor events.

  • Jaycee West Park

    Located across from Albertson’s Jaycee West Park has tennis courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball area, playground equipment and restrooms. The Brett Fitch Memorial Skate Park is also in this area.
